The macabre shadow

Timothy lived alone with his father, a very poor peasant who struggled to support and teach his son. His mother died ill when Tim, Timothy's nickname, was still small. The house was very small: only two rooms. In one of them there were two beds, one for Timothy and one for his father, all they had were two cows from which they drew milk to make cheeses and sell; some cabbage plantation around the house and some chickens. Timothy helped his father in the household chores.

Things were not going well because of the lack of money to buy rations for the cows, they no longer produced enough milk and they could not deliver the cheese orders anymore. There was a shortage of food on the table for meals.

Acacio, Timothy's father, went to the bar to try and find some money. He offered to clean the boots of the gentlemen for a few pennies. In this work he was greatly humiliated. Everyone laughed at him and treated him like a worm. He also did other services such as washing the bar's bathroom. When the men came in and saw him cleaning the floor, they pissed on the floor just to humiliate him. In particular, he had one, named Arthur, a very wealthy man and owner of half the city. He always made a point of throwing ash from his cigar on Acacio's nose. Acacio tried to conceal this work from his son, who already knew but pretended not to know not to leave his father even more humiliated. Acacius would tell his son that he was helping Mrs. Gertrude kneading the dough she used to bake.

Timothy went to school at great cost and sacrifice of his father. He was fifteen and wanted to finish his studies to enroll in a university. The money his father earned was basically to buy the books Tim used to study. There was little left for them to eat.

Tim had secret meetings with Gerusa, the daughter of the gentleman Arthur. He would always come home with something to eat that the girl gave him.

Once, Gerusa's brother, Aroldo, saw Tim running off the property and jumping over the fence. It was then that he waited until the next day and lay in wait. When Tim was talking to the girl, Aroldo surprised them, he told Tim not to go back there otherwise he would have trouble with him and his father. Tim did not listen and kept going. It was then that Aroldo told his father. This one went to the bathroom of the bar to threaten Acacio. He said he did not want to see his daughter in the company of a worm like his father. Acacio spoke with Tim but it was no use: he went to meet Gerusa again. Upon discovering, Arthur went to the bar and told the owner not to leave work there. Everyone in the town feared Arthur and did everything he said.

Acacio returned home very sad and humiliated. Tim was surprised by the presence of his father at home at that time. The two of them talked and Tim declared that he knew about his father's work. He regretted disobeying Arthur's orders.

With no money to continue his studies, Tim had to stop going to school. With hunger, without work, without hope, Acacio lay down in bed deeply distressed. Tim knelt at his father's feet trying to comfort him. Acacio fell asleep after much crying. Tim turned away from the bed, clapped his hands in prayer and said with all faith he could get:

--- I would give everything to see my father happy!

Suddenly, he heard the door open. A black shadow was standing on the bedroom door.

--- Who are you? --- He asked, startled.

--- It does not matter. I came here to help you. --- The shadow had a very low, soft voice. He spoke slowly.

--- How can you help? What can you do to help us?

--- Just ask what you want to have.

--- Ah!? --- One minute of silence. Tim was thinking of a request. --- Just ask?

--- Yes. Just ask and you will have. I see you have problems at home, do not you?

--- Yes. My father cannot work at the bar anymore and we do not have any more milk to make cheeses.

--- You want milk for the cheeses and you want a job for your father? --- Asked the shadow approaching Tim.

--- Wow! That would be very good indeed!

--- You can have it all right now...

Timothy's eyes widened with hope. There was a pot behind him; when the shadow drew nearer still, Tim stepped back and leaned on the pot. He was a little afraid and at the same time brave enough to continue the conversation.

--- But why would you do that? --- What do I have to do in return?

--- Once you have everything you want you will have to give me something that you like very much.

--- Something I like a lot? But what would it be? I am very poor I have nothing of value.

--- Yes, you have; something that interests me a lot. But I only come after you to see your father very happy. Is not that what you want? With plenty of milk for the cheese and a good job, your father will be very happy, will not him?

--- Yes, he will. Well, I have nothing that I cannot afford. Just those old clothes, some books and my sling...  --- After a little thought, Tim concluded that he had nothing to lose. --- I accept!

--- Great! Tomorrow morning your father will have everything you asked! --- The shadow came laughing out the door and disappeared.

Tim went to bed and slept a lot, he was very tired because of the feelings he had earlier.

The next day, Tim woke up as usual and could not remember the shadow arrangement. He did not see his father, so he yelled at him. His father replied with a shout far away, Tim left to see. His father was milking the cows; there were already two buckets full.

--- Dad! They did not have milk...

--- It's not wonderful, son! Now we can make the cheeses! --- Said Acacio radiant with joy.

Tim began to remember the conversation with the shadow the night before.

The two of them entered with the buckets full and began to work on the cheeses.     Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.

--- Good Morning! My name is Romualdo. I bought the Gameleira farm, here on the side.

--- Has the farm been sold!? What happened to Mr. Vespucci? --- Tim asked.

--- He sold the farm and moved with the family to the capital.

--- You can come in and sit down. --- He invited Acacio. --- How can I help you?

--- In fact I came here because I received many recommendations of your work with cheeses. Everyone says the best cheese in the area is yours. As you know, the Gameleira farm has more than two thousand head of dairy cattle. I need your cheese-maker service to make cheese with that whole milk.

Acacio's jaw dropped. It was a great undertaking and very profitable according to the proposal received. He would earn percentage on the amount of cheese produced plus one salary per month. His eyes flashed with joy. He did not hesitate to accept.

In two months of work, Acacio reformed and enlarged his house, bought half a dozen cows for him, built a large garden in his house, bought all the school supplies his son needed, and bought two horses for the wagon. The table was always full and they even bought special delicacies never tried before due to the high price.

Tim could not even remember the pact with the shadow. His life was very happy now. He saw his father happy too and had everything he needed. It was then that on a hot summer night he was sitting at the edge of the door looking at the moon. His father, going to bed and called him.

--- Let's sleep! I'm waiting for you. Come soon!

--- I'll go, Dad. I'm going to be here until I feel sleepy.

   Suddenly, the shadow came.

   --- Do you remember me?

--- Yes! --- Tim said, surprised. He was tense because he knew he would want the payment he could not even imagine what it was. --- I remember.

--- Today I came to seek payment as part of the agreement.

--- You can take whatever you want. After that day I got some valuables but nothing too expensive. We buy the cows that are more expensive. You can take it...

--- I do not want anything of material value.

--- No!?? --- He was startled.

--- No! I want something that you value very much, but it has no financial value whatsoever.

--- But I do not understand. What can it be?

   --- Your father!

Tim's eyes widened in alarm; that would never have happened to him.

--- But... why do you want my father? This is not part of the agreement!

--- I said I would take something of value to you, and you agreed. I did my part. I gave you everything you wanted. Look how your life is prosperous now.

--- No! Wait! I... did not know... I thought it was something of material value.

--- There's no turning back. You agreed.

--- So … --- Tim was desperate. He was the only relative he had. He tried to think fast, but he could not get any ideas. It was then that he decided to buy time to find a way to get rid of the evil shadow. --- Give me two days to say goodbye to him and prepare him...

--- Ah! --- Grunted the already angry shadow; now in a louder metallic voice. --- You will not break the covenant. I'll give you until tomorrow at the same time, so I'll be here to get my share of the deal, as soon as he finished speaking, he vanished quickly.

Tim, desperate, thought about a solution to the problem. She had to get rid of that devilish shadow. He could not lose his father after so much that they suffered to have a better life. It was then that he had an idea. As soon as the day dawned, he jumped out of bed long before his father woke up. He went to Mr. Noguinho's house and knocked on the door. It was an old root producer that for everything had an herb, bottle, tea, ointment, etc... He asked him for a combination that made the person sleep like stone for a while.

--- What are you up to, boy? --- He asked in a weak, husky voice. He was a very old man, white, with long white hair.

--- Ah! It's nothing! My father who is not sleepy has asked to come and get medicine for him. --- Tried to disguise, Tim.

--- Fine! --- The old man replied, making a face that he was pretending to believe. --- Take that bottle and put three drops in his milk at night.

--- Is he going to sleep?

--- Like stone! But do not put more than three drops because this is very strong.

Tim had not noticed that the old man did not know that his father drank milk before bed. He was so interested in making his plan work that he did not stick to it.

When he gave his father's time to drink his usual milk, Tim offered to pick him up. He put eight drops of the liquid and brought it to his father.

--- You never got the milk for me why this today? --- Inquired the curious father.

--- What a mess, Dad! I'm just being nice uh! --- He dismissed Tim.

Acacio drank the milk quickly and went to bed. Timothy had already bought a coffin that he had hidden behind the house where his father did not go. Quickly, he placed two boxes in the room and the coffin on top. He had a lot, but a lot of work to put his father in because this was a strong man and much bigger than Tim, a skinny kid. It filled with previously harvested flowers hidden in Arthur's garden and also kept in the backyard. He placed two candles beside the coffin and ascended them. He sat in the low-head chair near the coffin pretending to cry softly.

It was not long before the shadow arrived, at the right time promised. When he saw the coffin, he was in an astonished expression.

--- Ah!? But what is this?

--- I'm sorry I did not get good news. My father passed away this morning. The doctor said it was from the heart just like my grandfather. It's family. Everyone dies from the heart when a certain age comes. --- The shadow approached, inspected, walked around the coffin in silence. --- I am very sad. He was my only living relative! I do not have anyone else to keep me company and I'm only 15! He began to cry loudly. --- Please be my friend and keep me company. I am very sad!

--- It's that... I have... I... I cannot stay... --- The shadow was bewildered by Tim's request. --- I have to go. Bye! --- He disappeared in the space like the other times.

Tim kept the scene for another hour, fearing that the shade was nearby spying. Then he began to dismantle everything.

--- My gosh! How heavy you are, old man! My back is crippled to carry. He said loudly with the veins of his neck swollen from so much strength as to carry his father to bed.

The next day, everything was fine and Acacio noticed nothing. They continued their chores and life went on happily.

A few days later, Tim was coming home. It was already night and his father was playing guitar sitting on the stone under the elder. When he looked at the door of his house from afar, Tim saw the shadow and came running back. It did not work: he came at him furiously.

--- You deceived me but now you will not be able to escape. I'm taking your father today!

    --- No! Wait!

--- I've waited too long! Today he does not escape me. You cannot stop me. --- He laughed pleasantly.

Tim hid behind a rubber tree in front of his house.

--- I have only one thing to tell you before you take my father. --- Tim was trying to find an argument to get rid of the shadow or gain more time. It was a lot of pressure.

--- It's no use trying more tricks.

--- It's no trick. It's just part of the deal we made. You said "I would have to give you something I really like," not that you could get it. I'm not giving you my dad. You're the one who's going to get him. For the contract to be fulfilled I need to go over there and give him to you!

The shadow was angry; he let out a roar of immense fury.

--- You go there now and give me your father! This is part of the agreement we made. I've already done my part. --- He said in a fury.

--- I will not go! --- He said, folding his arms.

The shadow roared with hate clenching fists.

--- I'll find them together! Yes, wait for me! I'll be back! --- He disappeared in the griseb.

From that day on, Tim would always leave the house before the sun went down, and only came back very late when his father was already asleep. Strangely, his father did not ask why he had this habit. During the following dawns, Tim prayed or saw the shade indoors, in the yard, on the porch… He was always around. Tim concluded that he would not last long in that situation and that he would come back and this time he would know no more than sorry to give to get rid of him. It was then that he decided to go for help.

--- Mr. Noguinho! --- He called on the old man's door. --- Hey, little boy!

--- I’m on my way! --- He shouted from within. --- What is it boy? So flighty... are you going to take the father from the gallows?

--- Probably yes! I need your help. It's very serious.

--- Come in! Sit down and tell me what's going on.

The two sat down and Tim began to speak. He told the whole story to the old man and stood looking at him for an answer. The old man got up, paced back and forth; then stood in front of him and said,

--- I can help you. But this will only last for a while. Then this shadow will come back to haunt you. He will not give up easily, not at all.

--- It's all right! It's better than nothing, and then I’ll think of something else.

Noguinho went to the shelf. There were a couple of glassware with little things inside, dry branches of trees, dehydrated branches, various seeds, animal feet, etc. He took a sprig of dried rosemary, a red ribbon, an empty transparent glass, and a small metal pot.

--- Go to the church next Sunday and hand this rosemary sprig to the priest. Say that I asked him to bless during the Mass and then to place on the altar at the feet of the image of Our Lady. After the morning the mass is over, fill that glass with holy water from the baptismal font. When the priest blesses the sprig of rosemary, remember that you cannot touch it anymore, so bring a small bag to carry it. That night, stay at home with your father but just get home when the sun touches the horizon. You will ascend a candle of suet next to his bed and make a prayer to the saint that he most likes; take this ointment and pass on the sign of the cross on the forehead of your father; then hand the sprig of rosemary to him and tell him to fold it and put it in here. --- The old man opened a drawer under the table and took out a spherical pendant hanging from a fine silver chain. He opened the sphere and handed it to Tim. --- Here you will put the sprig of rosemary and close it. Throw holy water upon your father by splashing all over his body. Do for him a prayer to St. Gregory giving his soul to him for seven years. After that, every Sunday he will have to go to church to pray ‘’our Mary’’ and an ‘’Our Father’’ and finally thank Saint Gregory. Once done, he will be protected from the dark beast for seven years. I think it helps, right?

--- Of course yes! Better than dying! Mr. Noguinho, how much do I owe you?

--- Nothing for now. Then I'll ask you for a favor...

--- Favor!? --- Tim was scared wondering what kind of favor it would be. After what he'd been through with these ill-informed accords, he was very aware of everything.

--- Ah! No, no! Not that kind of favor! It was just a small request. That kind of thing does not interest me. You can go in peace and do everything right. Then we'll talk again. I've been through this experience before. There are more people in this city who have had the same problem with this same shadow.

--- Bye, little boy! Thank you!

Tim kept trying to figure out who would have made the pact with the shadow. Who would have asked Noguinho to help him get rid of the shadow? Until Sunday came, he decided to investigate. He had noticed that the shadow usually appeared from Monday to Thursday. Since it was still Monday, he stumbled on his Noguinho's door, covertly of course. Some lacking remedies appeared there. Some in need of husbands went there to ask for spells, others with small work issues. People who wanted to have kids and could not. Nothing interesting to Tim until, two days later, Arthur knocked on the old man's door. Mr. Noguinho looked disgusted when he saw that it was Arthur. Noguinho's house was on a very steep street so that the window at the top was set high for those who were on the inside rather low for those outside. Tim ran to the side and spied out the window, he heard Arthur say:

--- I cannot wait! This damned shadow is not getting what I want! And time is passing. If you do not solve this soon the girl will pay dearly! I do not want to have to go back here again! --- He left nervously and slammed the door.

Noguinho had noticed Tim's presence in the window, seeing everything but pretending not to notice.

--- Ah! Poor Gerusa! She does not deserve to have to pay for the coldness of this evil man! If only I had my medallion... I could save her! Without it I have no powers and I cannot do anything! Poor Acacio!

Tim's jaw dropped. Although he did not yet understand what the connection was with his father. Arthur had talked about the shadow getting something for him... but what would it be? And why the poor Gerusa would pay? Why poor Acacio? One thing was certain in Tim's mind: Arthur was blackmailing Noguinho that he trusted being a good-hearted old man; Gerusa was going to suffer at the hands of Arthur, a girl he liked very much; Noguinho being blackmailed by his father was going to suffer some consequence... he decided to help Noguinho. He began to meet Gerusa in secret. He told her that an object had been stolen from Mr. Noguinho and that he needed to return it urgently. He invented that Noguinho was very sick that he had no more salvation and that, on his deathbed, he had made that request. Gerusa decided to believe in the conversation and decided to help. He began to look for the medallion through the house. He always brought reports to Tim about the places he had come to. Tim began to suggest unobvious places: basement, under the floorboards, inside statues, thick books, under chairs or armchairs, etc... Finally, a few days later; she went to meet Tim …

--- Any news? --- He asked anxiously.

--- I found something that might interest you. Gerusa took a small wrapping of white paper from under her skirt and handed it to her. Tim opened anxiously. It was a medallion with seven colored stones circling a strange magical symbol. It was all made of a strange metal that sometimes looked white sometimes seemed yellow. It was too heavy for its size.

--- Gerusa! You are amazing! --- He hugged her.

    --- Do I deserve a kiss?

--- As many as you want! --- Tim started kissing her non-stop.

The next day, Tim prepared everything to go to church. It was Sunday. He did everything as Noguinho had said and stayed at home with his father waiting for the shadow. It took a little longer than he thought but he came. He came in softly watching everything. Tim saw him walking through the living room, through the kitchen... He went to the bedroom door and saw the son next to his father. It seemed strange: Tim seemed to have a very calm expression upon seeing him.

--- You may come in! --- Tim invited.

--- I came to get my payment. --- He said quietly. It was notorious in his voice that he was already suspicious because everything was very easy.

--- You can take him. He's right here. --- At that time, Tim had already told the whole story to Acacio. Of course, since he was going to surrender to St. Gregory he needed to know why. Tim pointed to his father who was sitting on the couch. The shadow approached him and he stared for a while until he decided to touch him. It seemed that there was electricity in Acacio's body. Sparkles splashed from the contact attempt.

--- What have you done? Bastard! --- Cried the furious shadow. This time his anger was three times greater. --- You will pay a high price! You do not know who you pissed off! But it will not be that way! One day this protection will be over and I'll be around! But the price will be much higher! Wait! "He left with so much fury that it formed a gale, knocking down several objects on the floor.

The next day, in possession of the medallion, Tim went to take it to his rightful owner. When Tim spotted Noguinho's house a block away, he noticed something strange. There was a big, handsome car at the door with two suit men at the door. Mr. Arthur was knocking at the door. Noguinho opened it. Tim was hidden behind the bushes of the front house.

   --- What's it? --- Noguinho asked.

--- I heard about everything that happened last night at Acacio's house. I will not be able to reach my goal anymore, so you --- screaming --- are no use to me! Put him in the car!

The men in suits threw Noguinho into the car brutally. Certainly good thing they would not do to him. Tim felt compelled to help him but was not sure what to do. He thought of asking for help from his father, since he now knew the story and knew that thanks to Noguinho he was alive and free of the shadow for seven years.

--- Clear! After all, he saved my life. We will do everything to save him! --- Acacio said. --- I know that house very well. I worked there when I was your age. I even know the secret places and I even imagine where Arthur with his machiavellian soul must have put the old man.

The two began to gather things to carry: iron hook, rope, rug, candles, matchsticks, hair clip, and knurl, dog walnut and green clothes.

Tim decided not to rely on Gerusa's help at that moment because he knew Arthur would be home. There would be no way she could help. They dressed in green and headed for Arthur's farm. Acacio told Tim that there was a secret room in the basement that it was certain that Noguinho was trapped inside. Arriving at the house, as expected, the wild dogs were loose in the garden. Acacio gathered the dog nuts with an herb and passed a red poultice on top then shot the garden. The dogs ate and they were fast asleep. They crept through the garden and went to the back. There were small rails below the floor of the house. They were the basement grilles. They began to saw. It was not long before one of them was already torn, but it took one more. The railing was near the kitchen door.

Suddenly, Lindalva, Arthur's wife, opened the kitchen door and was already leaving when she stopped at the kitchen door and told Gerusa holding the door open:

--- Come and help me get some strawberries for the pie.

When Gerusa arrived at the door she saw Tim and Acacio trying to get into the basement. She immediately pulled the mother inside.

--- Let's make an apple pie. It's a lot better than strawberry pie! --- She said to keep the mother in the house.

--- But you like strawberry pie so much... it was always your favorite... --- Retracted the mother.

--- Ah! But I'm sick of it! We always make it. Today we're going to make an apple, okay? Gerusa continued. What a relief to both, even if temporary.

Anyway, the other little bar was out. Acacio put the folded rug on the threshold as there were shards of glass set in cement. The two of them went in and pulled the rug down. They began to investigate the environment and found a large cage whose door was closed. Of possession of the staple, they were trying to open the lock of the dungeon. They could not. As they could not see right into the darkness, Tim began to call.

--- Noguinho! Noguinho, are you there? --- To confirm if the old man was really inside. There was no answer.

--- Did they hit him and he passed out? Old men are very fragile. --- Acacio explained.

--- Dad! Look! There's another little room there! --- He pointed to the other direction. The atmosphere was very dark even with a small light beam entering through the bars.

    --- Let's light a candle.

They set sail and walked slowly. It was a small room with a locked door. When they were trying to use the clamp again someone suddenly turned on the basement lights.

--- Look what we have here! It was Arthur with his overbearing tone. --- The worm and the washrooms to try to free the failed wizard... It takes courage to enter my house and get here. They are real heroes! Too bad it did not work! --- Get them, henchmen --- Get them!

The door had a small square with a railing through which one could see the interior of the room. The despair was great but Tim managed to think fast: he looked out the door and saw Noguinho lying on the floor; took the medallion out of his pocket and tossed it to him.

--- Noguinho! Take it! --- Tim shouted.

The old man woke up with Tim's cry and took the medallion. When he put it around his neck, a strong white light filled the basement. It was so strong that no one else could move or see anything. Noguinho said some unfamiliar words and slammed a palm with his hands cupped in a loud, strong sound. The henchmen and Arthur became static. Acacio proceeded with the clamp and opened the cell. They all left the stairs, where Arthur had come.

Arriving in the living room, there was no one. Noguinho went to the kitchen. He wanted to find Gerusa. Tim and Acacio went too but Noguinho asked them to wait in the living room. Gerusa was sitting pricking apples. Noguinho looked at her with a mysterious and deep look. She understood nothing. She was only a little startled to see an old stranger in the kitchen looking at her like that. Lindalva was scared too.

--- Who are you? What do you want? --- Lindalva asked.

--- That at this moment, all spells and enchantments made by this medallion owned by its previous owner, are canceled and reversed! --- Noguinho said loudly and firmly holding the medallion on top of his head. A very loud and strong sound filled the whole space. It was uncomfortable for the ears. They all covered them. Seconds later, Lindalva ran to embrace Noguinho. Noguinho ended the hug with Lindalva and ran to embrace Gerusa who, even though he did not know him, hugged him. She felt he was familiar.

Arriving in the living room, Tim ran to hug Gerusa. A tall, handsome young man appeared in the living room and began to speak to Acacius and Timothy:

--- I would like to thank you for the great favor you have done! Without you I would never have been able to.

--- Who are you? --- Tim asked, surprised.

--- Rsrsrs! Do not you really know? --- The man asked, laughing.

Tim looked at his father without understanding anything. They were both clueless.

--- I'm Noguinho! That's it! Arthur is also a wizard but he does not have half of my powers. What kept him in charge this whole time was that he and his son set up a plan and Aroldo managed to steal my medallion that is the key to all my power. He used it to bewitch my wife and daughter by making them think he was their husband and father. They were delighted all this time. With my powers he became the richest man in the city giving orders to everyone here. He delighted me to become an old octogenarian. The shadow that catches people's souls as payment for macabre deals came from my medallion. He already took many souls in this city and Acacio would be next.

At that moment, Tim was furious.

--- How can you … --- Tim shouted.

--- Calm down, I'll explain. I just passed the directions for it. I could not help him because he loved me. I could not act directly against him because of the medallion. Everything that was done with the magic of the medallion I knew and saw but could not prevent. That's why he knew his father drank milk before bed. The shadow was always there watching over your life. And everything he saw, I saw. When Tim went to spy on my conversation with Arthur, it was my mental influence. To my knowledge I still managed to do a few small things and lure Tim back home to hear everything. When he was at the window I saw him but pretended he had not seen it.

--- You knew all along! --- Tim exclaimed.

--- Yes! But I had to be quiet and trust my destiny in your hands.

--- And now? What are you going to do with them? --- Asked Acacio.

--- He and his son will be working here as servants. --- Aroldo was the son of Arthur of his first marriage; therefore he was not son of Lindalva. --- I am going to take possession of this house because I am the true owner.

--- Will you let me date Gerusa? --- Tim asked.

Noguinho let out a laugh that Tim did not understand if it was sarcasm or approval.

--- Of course, boy! You are a great boy, very brave and insightful! What more could I want for my daughter? --- As for the shadow, do not worry about it anymore. I'm going to arrest him so he will not go around scaring people any more.

--- Then let's keep the things he gave us? --- Asked Acacio.

--- Yes! You saved me. Have my eternal gratitude! --- Closed Noguinho.

The next day there was a big party in that house. The whole city was invited. Arthur never humiliated people again. In fact, he's the one who got humiliated cleaning the bathrooms all the time, even the piss of Tim and Acacio on the floor.
